Modern Fiction with an unsettling edge.
I am currently writing a story with a strong fantasy dimension (extract below). This is something I would call
modern fiction. I have mentioned this
science fiction story with a contemporary setting before but I wanted to include an extract of the fiction that gives more of its flavour and so it gets one more page.
The writing of the story.
A piece of advice to writers of fiction that is often given is to write what you know. I have included settings that I am familiar with. But I think the greater and more interesting part of any fiction writing is to write about the unknowable and make it believable. I find my illustrations an enormous help in trying to do just that. I draw a picture of one of the
characters involved in the story and then
write from the
picture.
Julia and Mr Cricket
An extract from page 2 of the story.

It was unusual to get a call on a land line these days and this particular phone hadn’t rang in quite some time. Mobile ring tones are all the same but land line rings vary from country to country and the Austrian ring tone, quite different to the one she had grown up with, reminded Julia that she hadn’t been home for some time.
Julia picked up the receiver and took the call.
“Das darf nicht war sein.” She thought as she put the phone down, then, “I must start thinking in English again.”.......
