I Had Done
 
We use this form of words to show we are talking about a past action that is connected to another past action.
This is without the ...ing form and so we show that there is a point of time involved.
 
For example.
I had painted the room before he rang. (Bothactions are in the past the painting and the phone call and they are connected and the painting is first.)
 
I had negotiated a better deal before it fell through. ( the negotiation and fall through are in the past, connected and the negotiation is first.)
 
Why was the bus service cancelled?  It had become unreliable. (the cancellation and unreliability are both in the past and connected but the unreliability came first.)
